Art-Net & sACN Signal Flow

Architecture, routing topologies, packet overhead, and universe budgeting for large-scale multi-universe automated lighting rigs.

Art-Net 4 Architecture

Unicast-based UDP packet delivery allowing continuous addressing of up to 32,768 distinct DMX universes. Art-Net 4 introduces dynamic port binding and comprehensive Art-RDM management without bringing down live DMX stream refresh rates.

sACN (ANSI E1.31) with Multicast

Streaming ACN employs standard IPv4 multicast addressing (239.255.0.0/16). Each universe streams on its own multicast IP, allowing managed network switches to deliver only requested universes to specific drop nodes using IGMP Snooping.

DMX512 Physical Layer Rules

A DMX512 line functions as an RF transmission line running at 250 kbaud. Omitting a 120-ohm (1/4W) terminating resistor between Pins 2 and 3 at the final fixture causes high-frequency voltage reflections that mirror back along the line, resulting in random strobe flicker and erratic pan jumps.

Never bridge physical DMX lines across separate power distribution services without opto-isolated splitters. Potential voltage differences between stage ground rods can burn out receiver transceivers (SN75176 / MAX485) and induce 50/60Hz ground hum into audio stage boxes.
